ABOUT JIBFEST

What started out as a bunch of befriended Nixon team riders sharing some waves together, developed into an annual and much anticipated event. Other than traditional high-stress competitions, the Nixon Surf Challenge is all about having fun, a relaxed atmosphere and an emphasis on free-surfing and style. A group of hand-picked surfers gets the change to participate in this invite-only event, drawing talents from all around the world. In the end the team decides together who the winner is following a non-traditional scoring system. This is what makes the Nixon Surf Challenge so unique and the ideal environment to showcase some skills and creativity in surfing.

HISTORY

The historical Basque city of San Sebastian has been the home of nine of the past ten Nixon Surf Challenges. For its ten-year anniversary, the event was brought to a place where no-one would ever guess a surf competition could be held at: the artic waters of the Lofoten Islands, Norway. This year, we strove to pursue 2011’s initiative: create the unseen, derive from the standards and find the uncommon place. From the iceberg of the polar circle to the arid land of La Graciosa: welcome to the 2012 Nixon Surf Challenge.

LOCATION

Home to only 700 inhabitants and small enough to explore on foot, La Graciosa has developed a mythical reputation among surfers: 27 km2, no paved roads, a lunar landscape and yes, some pretty extreme locals who have been going about their business quietly for years, gorging themselves on world-class reef breaks on a day-to-day basis. So if you’re eyeing up on charging the little-known slabs of La Graciosa, take a good humble attitude, show plenty of respect and trust us, you’ll get the rides of a lifetime.

ATTENDEES

For the 2011 JibFest, the Nixon crew, along with the event organizers Jeremy Jones, JP Walker and Dave Downing, thought long and hard about which riders should make the invite list. After some arguing, a bit of back and forth and lots of laughing, a solid group of riders was selected. Heres who came along for the ride this past April.

Dave, along with JP Walker and Jeremy Jones, was one of the founding fathers of the JibFest. Dave was an integral part of the rider selection, course design and overall a main component in making this year’s JibFest the best one yet.

DAVE DOWNING

Age: "ask again later" HOME TOWN: Encinitas, CA
HOME MOUNTAIN: Big Bear/ Lake Tahoe

Jeremy is another one of the founders fathers of the JibFest. Having attended all the JibFest events and snowboarding longer than some the attendees have been alive one would surmise that Jeremy should be the most jaded one of the event. But the reality is, he’s the most stoked one at JibFest. Jeremy endlessly rode every obstacle and was constantly the first to step to something new.

JEREMY JONES

Age: 35 HOME TOWN: Sandy, Utah
HOME MOUNTAIN: Brighton/ Northstar at Tahoe

Probably the biggest advocate in bringing back the JibFest, JP’s fingerprint was on the event every step of the way. Per usual, JP showed all the new guys just how much style has to do with every trick. It’s easy to say that JP is the “godfather” of the Nixon JibFest.

JP WALKER

HOME MOUNTAIN: Brighton
John is one of the invitees of the original JibFest from back in the day. You’d never guess John was an Alaskan native from his prowess on urban features. With his dry humor and easygoing demeanor his personality was a perfect fit at this years JibFest.

JOHN KOOLEY

Age: 31 HOME TOWN: Brighton, UT
HOME MOUNTAIN: Brighton, UT

Hailing from Massachusetts, Chris has more home pride than anyone we’ve ever met. Chris managed to shred everything at the event all while having a bum ankle and a Bruins jersey on.

CHRIS GRENIER

Age: 24 HOME TOWN: Southboro, MA
HOME MOUNTAIN: Mount Snow
What can be said about Alex Andrews except that he’s the epitome of good vibes? As part of the new crop to come out of Utah, he was a shoe in for this year’s JibFest. His Hard work ethic, ability to laugh at the worst jokes and ride all day nonstop guaranteed him a spot on this years invite list.

ALEX ANDREWS

Age: 23 HOME TOWN: Ogden, UT
HOME MOUNTAIN: Powder Mountain, UT
If you’re not familiar with Brian, then it’s time for you to go back and do your research. Brian is one of the OG’s from the original JibFest. Now retired from Pro Snowboarding we pulled Brian out of the woodwork to show the new crop of invitees some of the original flavor of the JibFest. Brian’s still got it. He was the first at JibFest to complete the “S” rail and he was the closest to ever finish the circle rail.

BRIAN THIEN

Age: Confidential HOME TOWN: Orange County
HOME MOUNTAIN: anywhere in Tahoe
Eman was really supposed to be Nic Suave. When we got word just days before that Nic had injured his ankle and wouldn’t be making it to JibFest and we started scrambling for names on the alternate list. JP made quick work of the alternate list by throwing it away and insisting Eman be invited come in Nic’s place. Long story short, JP couldn’t have been more right on this. Eman was the perfect fit. From his humor to his hard charging and reckless style, everyone was hyped to meet and ride with Eman.

EMAN ANDERSON

Age: 25 HOME TOWN: Dirtville, QC
HOME MOUNTAIN: Whistler, BC
One of the new crop of Jibbers, coming out of Minnesota, Joe was the first of the crew to be hand picked for the JibFest by JP, Jeremy and Dave. Whether he’s getting picked on by Jeremy Jones or getting dared by JP to step to something first, Joe was definitely an event favorite. Always one of the first on the course and one of the last off.

JOE SEXTON

Age: 24 HOME TOWN: Applevalley, MN
HOME MOUNTAIN: Hyland Hills
LNP made everyone wish that they were from Quebec. His English maybe less than perfect, he drinks a lot of beer and he boards…really well! LNP was the icing on the cake at the JibFest; MVP for personality and style…a shredder through-and-through.

LNP (LAURENT N. PAQUIN)

Age: 24 HOME TOWN: Charny, QC
HOME MOUNTAIN: Stoneham, QC
For a lack of a better term, the word “workhorse” best describes Louif. What can you say about the guy? He garnered the most votes for who rode the best and he was also awarded for “best trick” at the 2011 JibFest.

LOUIS FELIX PARADUS

Age: 24 HOME TOWN: Quebec City, QC
HOME MOUNTAIN: Le Massif
Scott’s another Massachusetts local that marches to the beat of his own drum. If there’s one thing to take away from him at the JibFest it’s that he likes things his own way. If everyone’s doing something, Scott needs to put his own twist on it. Whether it’s by doing it switch or undoing one binding, it’s the “Scott” way.

SCOTT STEVENS

Age: 27 HOME TOWN: Westfeild, MA
HOME MOUNTAIN: Blandford, MA

Beast! Seth steps to everything big the first time going at it and that’s his personality. Seth shredded the whole time and was all smiles. The guy is epic!

Eric is a charger. From mental El Quemao, Lanzarote, to epic Mullaghmore Head, Ireland, he has proven more than once he's pretty damn good at riding waves. Multiple European Champion, first Frenchman to ever qualify for the WCT in 2005, Eric paved the way for the next generation of European surfers. A true icon, and a true friend.

ERIC REBIERE

Age: 33 HOME TOWN: Arrecife, Can
HOME MOUNTAIN: El Quemao

The grom! Zak was the grom of the group, and in typical grom fashion, he was refreshing to watch. With endless energy, Zak was oblivious enough to injury that he would try just about anything that someone threw out for him to do.
